Find Your Legislators

Writing letters to your state and federal representatives makes a difference. Legislators make decisions about lots of issues. By contacting your legislator, you play an important role in educating them about the issues and how they affect their constituents. So let your legislators know what issues you care about. For ideas, check out CWEALF's Legislative Priorities.

To find your legislators, visit Project Vote Smart. All you need to do is enter your address and zip code. Project Vote Smart will give you a complete list of your state and federal representatives, along with their contact information.

If you choose to write to your legislators, keep these pointers in mind:

  • Include your contact information. Legislators want to hear from their constituents; including your address lets them know you live in their district. Also, your legislator represents a small community and may want to follow up with you for more information.
  • Address one issue per letter. Your letter should be concise, so stick to the point, and the first paragraph should tell your legislator what you would like her/him to do.
  • State why the issue is important to you. Your opinion is informed by your personal and professional experiences, so be sure to share your perspective with your legislator.
  • Be polite. Remember, your legislator is someone that lives in your community. You want to be able to work with her/him on future issues.
