Meet Josie
Josie came to CWEALF at a very difficult point in her life. Buried in medical bills from a recent diagnosis of cancer, she was struggling financially and emotionally with her impending divorce. Due to the financial burden of the legal fees in a divorce, her medical bills, and the basic expenses for her two young children, she was lost and not sure what to do next. Not to mention, she needed assistance with filing for disability because her employer was giving her some trouble now that her family and medical leave act time had run out.
Upon calling CWEALF's Information & Referral Line, she spoke with one of our expertly trained volunteers who was able to guide her to some social service agencies and the right resources to ensure that she was able to apply for and qualify for disability. CWEALF assisted her in understanding the paperwork the agency required, which ultimately, which expedited a normally, strenuous process. CWEALF's volunteer connected her to CWEALF's Community Advocate who provided her with the support she needed to pursue her divorce case self-represented (pro se).
While Josie still has some obstacles ahead of her, she has applied for disability, is receiving services from the social service system to ensure that her and her children’s basic needs such as housing and food are met, she is undergoing proper medical treatment, and is on her way to soon reach a divorce agreement. Josie not only received the appropriate information and resources she needed to build a more stable life for her and her family by contacting CWEALF, she also received a support system that empowered her and made her obstacles seem a little bit smaller and much more reachable.
